901 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226
As much as Detroit has transformed before our eyes there are still a few historic staples that all visitors & locals alike should check out. John K. King rare & used bookstore is hands down one of the best used book stores you will ever step foot into. It is a dream for bibliophiles & history lovers and one of my personal favorite places in Detroit.
Plan to spend at least a few hours as you wander the 4 floors of over a million unique and rare books, posters and prints, being referred to in print as “one of the largest and strangest collections in North America"
In 1971, he moved his business to a rented location in the Michigan Theatre Building in downtown Detroit. In 1983, King decided to purchase a building of his own and he purchased the abandoned Advance Glove Factory on West Lafayette that consisted of a basement and four above-ground floors, which was plenty of room to store and shelf the store’s books. Soon after, he also purchased an adjacent building, the old Otis Elevator building, in which the collection’s rarer and more notable books are located that can be seen by appointment only. .
A map will be provided upon entering but you will get lost in content, I promise.
